Periostitis

Date published:

Periostitis is an inflammation of the periosteum, which often occurs against the background of other dental problems. This complex inflammatory and infectious process occurs due to caries-affected teeth. To prevent the disease from becoming advanced, it is important to visit the dentist's office regularly. This will allow timely diagnosis of periostitis, treatment of carious cavities, and prevention of complications.

Forms of periostitis

Depending on the form of the disease, symptoms and methods of treatment are classified. Today, there are several forms of this dental problem. Periostitis happens:

  • Simple - characterized by a moderate pain symptom, slight redness of the mucous membrane. This form of the disease responds well to treatment if it is started in a timely manner.
  • Serous - usually occurs after a jaw injury. Develops on an infected periosteum. Accompanied by pain symptoms, swelling, redness of the mucous membrane of the gums.
  • Fibrous - occurs against the background of a sluggish inflammatory process in the jaws. It is characterized by a chronic form, exacerbates from time to time, and causes discomfort. From the side of the periosteum, connective tissue grows, pain occurs in the area of the inflammatory focus.
  • Purulent - accompanied by very severe pain, accumulation of pus in the focus of inflammation. This form of the disease requires immediate treatment with the rehabilitation of inflammatory foci, opening the periosteum.

Depending on the course of the disease, periostitis can be acute or chronic. To clarify the stage, form of the disease, the doctor conducts a diagnosis, which includes a visual examination, X-ray of the jaw. If purulent periostitis is suspected, the dentist prescribes a general blood test.

Symptoms of the disease

Each specific case of the disease is characterized by its own symptoms. But the most common symptoms are:

  • Cheek swelling;
  • Pain extending to the jaw, temples;
  • Increase in body temperature;
  • Swollen lymph nodes;
  • Sleep disturbance;
  • Pathological tooth mobility.

It is impossible not to notice the development of periostitis. Often the disease is acute, and the pain is so strong that it disrupts a person’s usual way of life.

Reasons for the development of periostitis

Periostitis or flux causes pathogenic microflora, which penetrates the periosteum. Foci of inflammation are formed against the background of a decrease in immunity, hypothermia.

The reasons for the development of periostitis can be:

  • Jaw injuries;
  • Caries;
  • Periodontitis;
  • Periodontitis;
  • Acute gingivitis.

Pathogenic microorganisms can penetrate into the periosteum during purulent inflammatory processes that have arisen on the skin of the face. Nonspecific causes that lead to the disease, experts call the pathology of the veins, rheumatism.

Treatment of periostitis

The doctor, taking into account the form of the disease, selects an effective treatment. It can be therapeutic and surgical. If the disease has not passed into a chronic form, is at the initial stage, therapeutic treatment is carried out.

However, periostitis is often treated only surgically. The treatment takes place under anesthesia, so patients do not feel pain, discomfort. In exceptional cases, when the disease has become severe, the doctor removes the diseased tooth that provoked periostitis.
