Types of cantilever prostheses
Console prostheses are different, and they differ, first of all, in the material of manufacture. They are made from:
- Cermets - this is a more budget option;
- Zirconium - is more expensive, but has hypoallergenic properties.
In appearance, the prosthesis can also be different. The console, which serves to replace the tooth, always acts as a one-piece structure, but the anchor point can consist of several crowns at once.
Until recently, a cantilever bridge prosthesis was considered in dentistry as a fixed structure. However, today they can also be removable - for this, the design has locks and paws for attaching to anchor points.
Indications and contraindications
Cantilever prostheses are often installed in the following cases:
- In the absence of one tooth;
- If implantation fails.
At the same time, to install the console, one or two support points with a fixed root are needed on one side of the problem area. The console is more often recommended when working with incisors and canines, because they are subject to a minimum load. On the other hand, if there is no alternative solution, consoles are also used to replace molars.
Are there any contraindications to the installation of a cantilever prosthesis? Of course, as with any dental structure! Among them are:
- absence of the last molar;
- absence of more than two teeth;
- supports with damage - this leads to too much load on the supports;
- the predisposition of reference points to displacement - installing a console will only speed up this process.
The dentist will tell you about the presence of contraindications.
Installation and care of the prosthesis
Consultation is the first stage at which the doctor will examine the oral cavity, identify the absence of contraindications and take casts of the jaw. If you need to perform oral hygiene or cure some teeth before installing the prosthesis, the doctor will prescribe treatment. After one or two weeks, it will be possible to return to the dentist to install the finished structure.
After installing the cantilever prosthesis, the dentist will tell you how to care for it. You need to follow the following rules:
- Brush your teeth twice a day;
- Use dental floss daily;
- Do professional oral hygiene annually;
- Visit the dentist every six months.
With proper care, the design will last 5-7 years, after which it will need to be replaced with a new one or resort to another type of prosthetics.
